John Peter Wonais is the founder of Wonais Law, LLC, D/B/A DebtPros. Born and raised in the Chicagoland area, John understands the unique challenges people face in Chicago and has a deep-rooted passion for protecting the finances, homes, and businesses of the clients he represents.

Prior to founding DebtPros, John practiced bankruptcy law at one of the largest bankruptcy law firms in Chicago where he helped thousands of people eliminate their debts and get a fresh start. However, being at a larger law firm, John noticed clients were not receiving the personal attention they deserved – cases were often handed off to paralegals and staff members. With this in mind, John established DebtPros with the goal of providing personal, aggressive legal representation for those struggling with overwhelming debt.

In meeting with clients, John listens closely and provides guidance throughout the bankruptcy process. He knows the most current and up-to-date strategies for resolving your debt problems and never backs down from a fight. Most notably, John successfully litigated a case against the City of Chicago all the way up to the Supreme Court of the United States. Re Fulton, 926 F.3d 916 (2019).

John attended law school in Chicago at The John Marshall Law School where he obtained his J.D. and LL.M. in Tax Law cum laude. He was also on The John Marshall Law Review where he wrote several publishable articles on Tax Law issues. Prior to attending law school, John graduated from Indiana University where he majored in Economics and minored in Business.

Whether you ultimately file bankruptcy or not, you can trust attorney John Wonais to help you weigh all your options and be there for you in your time of need.

Aggressive Legal Representation

In addition to providing personal, compassionate legal representation, our bankruptcy lawyers in Chicago are not afraid to take on even the most complex cases. Recently, John Wonais litigated a bankruptcy case against the City of Chicago all the way up to the Supreme Court of the United States. See City of Chicago v. Fulton, 141 S.Ct. 585 (2021).

The case was about a client who filed a Chapter 13 bankruptcy case because the city of Chicago impounded her vehicle for unpaid parking tickets. Rather than immediately returning the car to her upon filing, like the City previously used to do, they refused, citing a new ordinance they passed to try and pressure debtors into not filing bankruptcy. While other bankruptcy lawyers were ok with this practice, John was not. Instead, he sued the City and won in the bankruptcy court, United States District Court, and 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.
